Celebrate Mother's Day at The Red Clover Inn

Mother's Day and Mushrooms :: Red Clover Inn :: Killington, VTShe’s been there for you since the beginning – bandaging a skinned knee, cheering at your dance recital, or teaching you to keep your hands at 10 and 2 o’clock on the steering wheel.

Now, this Sunday, it’s time to thank Mom for all she’s done for you. The Red Clover Inn is offering a special three-course Mother’s Day Prix Fixe Menu from 3:00 to 9:00 pm. This mom-centric menu features delicious dishes like Portugese-style shrimp, pan-seared beef sirloin, and three-mushroom risotto.

It’s a dinner just like Mom used to make – if Mom had studied at the Culinary Institute of America, and worked at top restaurants in France, Italy, and Boston, like our head chef Dennis Vieira. Or, if she prefers, she can order from our regular restaurant menu.

Call us at 800-752-0571 to make your reservation today – you and Mom will both be glad you did.

The Maiden Voyage of the Winter Tweed Carnival

Aaahh yes, Tweed. The music. The myth. The New England legend. Colorful, unpretentious and always fascinating. Tweed.

Bow, Rob and the rest of their collective were aiming high once more. They had to, there was plenty to rise up against. The last few months had not been easy for the steady as she goes Green Mountain State. The blessed Mother Nature had dealt a couple gut wrenching body blows to Vermont. Irene dumped unprecedented amounts of precipitation which resulted in massive damage and disruption. If that wasn’t enough, this past Winter resulted in what could best be described as a snow drought. Too much and then not enough. Thanks for nuttin’ ma.

Then this past weekend, in Mother Nature’s wake, came the maiden voyage of the Winter Tweed Carnival at Pico Mountain (Killington, VT). Fortunately for the hungry (i.e., music lovers and Tweed followers) who attended, Tweed had all the best hands on deck. Friday night dawned Flowing Bridge, Goldtown and Waylond Speed got the rock rolling forward. Then Saturday’s lineup increased the momentum with close to twelve hours of nearly non-stop, high-seas music adventure. Holy Plow, Crunchy Western Boys, Scott Ricciuti and Pistol Whipped, Township, Andrea Gillis Band, White Dynamite and fittingly the night was closed out by Bow Thayer and Perfect Trainwreck.

Aaahh yes, Tweed.

Take note Mother Nature, the spirit of Tweed is alive and well in Central Vermont. And as you can see we have the pictures to prove it.

The following letter was pulled off the SnowMont Music Festival’s Facebook page. For what it’s worth, we’re still going to run the interviews we have with some of the artists. The artist took the time and therefore deserve the exposure.

Just People Watchin'

It got to be about 3.00 pm and my in-for-the-weekend riding comrades still had a hunger for a few more runs. As they should—all things considered—conditions were exceptional.

Me? It was time to pause, relax and reflect. After a short walk to the car I returned to plant myself and my Nikon at the bottom of Ramshead. Here’s twenty-five plus shots of just people watchin’ that I believe are worth sharing. Nothing says, “Come to Central Vermont” like good times and smiling faces, eh?

Interview: Lance Richard of The Snow Angel Tavern

We all know and appreciate that Vermonters are a special breed. Honorable, persistent and rare to back down from a challenge. While the rest of the country whines about “the new economy”, Vermonters are doubling down on doing what they do best…living, pure and simple. Sure, Irene left her mark but Vermont stepped up to the challenges. Again and again and again.

The Snow Angel Tavern, owner/chef Lance Richard and his team are perfect examples for the rest of us. Difficult economic times are not, there’s work to be done. Ya can’t keep a good Vermonter down, right? And this is exactly why KYR was compelled to interview Lance.

Chef Lance Richard :: The Snow Angel Tavern :: Mendon, VT

Mark @ KYR :: Lance, before we get into The Snow Angel Tavern, why don’t you share a bit about yourself? What led up to the moment just before bringing TSAT to life?
Owner/Chef Lance Richard :: I’m a native Vermonter, born in Morrisville, though I grew up near cape Cod from the age of ten. I started apprenticing in restaurants at the age of 15, and continued my apprenticeship after moving back to VT at the age of 18. I cooked in Stowe and Burlington for 6 years until I got a job as chef de cuisine at Black Eyed Susan’s on the island of Nantucket in 2002. I continued to cook in Stowe during the winter for the next 2 years, but finally stayed year round in Nantucket in 2004. I then got an Executive Chef job at Kitty Murtagh’s after six seasons at BES, and met my partner, Viktoriya Angelova, who also worked at Kitty’s. We began discussing our own business last spring (2011).

M @ KYR :: So why now? Why Central Vermont?
Chef Lance :: Well, I’ve been an aspiring chef for 18 years and owning my own place was my dream. Being from Vermont, and knowing how expensive it is to own in Nantucket, I started exploring restaurants in VT 2 years ago, visiting locations in Stowe and Burlington. I looked at Hemingway’s and also Peavine’s in Stockbridge, and finally the former Piper’s Pub here in Mendon. Viktoriya and I fell in love with the building’s potential, and after negotiating a deal that worked for us, we signed the lease in early October 2011.

M @KYR :: I love the name and the logo. It’s not often Angel and Tavern fit so well together. {Smile} Tell us why you picked the name? How does it represent TSAT?
Chef Lance :: When I imagine a restaurant concept, I first look at the building itself- is it a diner, a bistro, a pub, etc. Then I factor in the market need in the area, and formulate a name that goes with the concept and style. I knew the trend of Vermont ski areas, having been groomed in Stowe, and I wanted the name to be indicative of winter, yet be warm and inviting. I thought the building would be a perfect roadside tavern, but I wanted my experience and love for quality food to set us apart from the average bar and grille. After bouncing a few names off Viki, I blurted out, “The Snow Angel Tavern”, and we both knew we had a winner. What I love is that to make a snow angel after a storm, is a pure expression of joy. To just lay down, forget about all your worries, and make something beautiful from something so cold. We just love the name.

Facebook :: Facebook.com/pages/The-Snow-Angel-Tavern.

M @ KYR :: One of my visits was on a Tuesday, $5.00 burger night. The weather was wet and unpleasant. The roads hardly ideal. Yet you had a really nice crowd. Impressive. What’s your secret to getting off to such a great start?
Chef Lance :: We had 2 months to get the building ready-it hadn’t been opened for years, so we had a lot to do. When we weren’t painting or cleaning or going over numbers, we would try and reach out to other local business owners and promote ourselves in the neighborhood. We handed out hundreds of flyers in Rutland, Mendon, and Killington, so I think the anticipation helped us. However, I think the real secret was something we planned for from the beginning-great food! A chef-owned restaurant is something amazing, and all the award winning restaurants in the world are such, after all, at the end of the day you’re selling food, so who better to run the place than the person who understands food best. We work really hard to make everything ourselves. I even turned the walk-in freezer into dry storage, because we have no need for such freezer space-everything is fresh!

M @ KYR :: Of course all the food is delicious. But as the man with the plan in the kitchen, what are the signature TSAT dishes? In other words, if it were my last meal what should I order? {Smile}
Chef Lance :: I think we’ve been most recognized for our hand cut fries, our fresh seafood, and our homemade desserts like Peach Berry Crisp and Chocolate Mousse. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, if I didn’t love them all they wouldn’t be on the menu! But if I had to recommend a last meal I’d say try the Pork Schnitzel with lemon caper sauce- its a house favorite.

M @ KYR :: Spring and summer will be here before we know it. What’s next? What should we be looking for from TSAT?
Chef Lance :: I wouldn’t expect us to close for long, but I anticipate a lull in the spring-good time for a vacation!

M @ KYR :: Well, certainly even successful entrepreneurs deserve a holiday. Until then, is there anything we didn’t cover that you want to mention before we wrap this up?
Chef Lance :: I want people to understand that this is a family run restaurant, myself in the kitchen, Viki in the dining room, and her brother Georgi behind the bar. And when you come here, you’re part of our family.

M @ KYR :: Okay, now is your chance to send out some love…
Chef Lance :: I want to send some love to my partners, Viki and Georgi. Without their support we never would have made this happen. I often get all the credit, but they work with as much passion as I do. I was also lucky enough to bring my sous chef up from Nantucket, and our 7 years experience cooking together has made the kitchen what it is. Thanks Guys!! We’d also like to send love to Manjuri and Jigger from the Cortina Inn, Steve and Robin from Killington Motel, and Martin from Budget Ski Rental. They’ve been very supportive and sent us many customers!

Thanks Lance – for the interview, and more importantly for the great food and welcoming us into your family

Yes! There's Snow in These Here Hills

Whether it’s emails or Facebook messages, the question that comes up the most often the last last couple weeks isn’t “Will it be Mitt?” or “When will Linsanity end?”  or even “Why can’t the Pats beat the Giants?”.  The question that keeps repeating is: “Is there snow up there?” And the answer? Oh yes. Come get some. There’s plenty to go around.

For those of you who may still be in doubt, here’s a cross section of shots from earlier today (Friday 17 February). Truthfully, there are some dicey spots here and there but they’re minimal—at least they were mid-afternoon today. So aside from the expected occasional mid-February flaws, the Resort’s mountain-ops has done an exceptional job in spite of Mother Nature’s stinginess so far this year. Maybe next year mountain-ops should handle the marketing as well?

Winter Dew Tour 2012: Photos Day 4

Over 700 images in just four days. And those are just the one that made the cut. Damn, that’s a lot of shootin’. Agreed, shot by shot some could be tossed out. But as a collection of images aiming to capture the ebb and flow of a moment, sometimes just-okay shots help to establish pace and plot for the killer visual swag.

If you were there, you already know it was a great weekend. If you weren’t, and you’ve spent some time poking at the 700+ then you know you’re sure to make it next year. Enough chatter, let’s get to the good stuff. Enjoy!

24 January 2012 :: One comment

Snow bunnies? Sno! Bunnies!!

Different strokes for different folks, as they say. And even in the middle of Dew weekend, the adage held true. The tour guide for the evening—aka yours truly—spelled out the usual Saturday night options and drew blank, if not slightly cold stares from the weekenders. So I paused, dug a bit deeper into the ol’ bag of tricks and shuttled JH & Crew off to Santa Fe for some smooth Myk Sno.

As expected, the vibe was chillin’ and in time the cold stares turned to warm bunny smiles. The talented Myk & Co. helped of course. But perhaps it was also the free round of drinks one daring (male) soul sent over that had something to do with the love for Myk Sno, Santa Fe and even the tour guide. Whatever the reason, I was just glad not to be rolled up in a carpet and stepped on. I hear they do that kinda stuff in the Flatlands.

The Saturday night luck rolled deeper still. Myk’s set was shortened at Santa Fe and relocated over to Outback Pizza. Joey Leone plus Myk equals a rhythm & bluesful rockin’ good time. Their collective version of the Bill Wither’s classic “Use Me”—which by the way is one of my all time faves—was smokin’ enough to get my old ass up off the bar stool and shufflin’ around a bit. Yeah, it was that good.

For the rest of the story I’m going to let the pictures do the talkin’.

Winter Dew Tour 2012: Photos Day 3

Truth be told, Dew Day 3 started where Day 2 left off—at Jax (http://supportinglocalmusic.com). The New Jersey-ite guests were a bit off on their E.T.A. so fashionably late meant a post-midnight arrival. Technically that means it was Day 3, right?

Not to worry, Ms. JH & her band of bunnies wasted no time warming up to the playful juxtaposition of dance tune covers and guitars as strum-jockeyed by Jamie & Aaron Audet. From Michael Jackson to Usher, the boys rocked it with cheeky pride. Sadly no Gaga or Village People, at least not in the set we were treated to. Maybe next time?

As for the day’s day at Bear Mtn, it’s was pretty damn Dew-licious. Topping it all off was Torin Yater-Wallace. Torin took the men’s freeskiing superpipe gold and instantly became the youngest athlete to ever win a Winter Dew Tour final. At just 16 years old, he knocked the un off unbelievable.

Yeah, that’s right. Dew history was made at the legendary Killington Resort in Killington, Vermont. Here are 200+ shots documenting that massive moment of a day.

Winter Dew Tour 2012: Photos Day 2

In retrospect, yesterday might have been a bit too good to be true. Mother Nature pushed back a bit on Day 2 and that push-back took the form of wind, wind and more wind. She squashed one of the slopestyle events and came close to doing the same in the super-pipe. Sarah Burke and the risks of going extra big were on the minds of many, and rightfully so.

Once again, let’s cut the KYR small talk and roll the photos…

Critics please note that for the most part there is no post-production on these shots. Ultimately, the KYR objective of photographing events is to capture the moment. Sometimes those moments are not so perfect. And sometimes there’s not enough time for image correction. So here’s the fire hose, so to speak.

Winter Dew Tour 2012: Photos Day 1

Let the Dewin’ and Tourin’ begin! It couldn’t have been a better day. Sunshine and normal Winter temps. (Remember last year?) Mountain Ops won the battle with Mother Nature. Everything looked to be in top form with the word of the day being “fast”. But why read when you can watch? Here’s a solid and diverse set of photos from the Killington Resort stop of Dew Tour 2012: Day 1. Enjoy!

Critics please note that there is no post-production on these shots. The immediate goal is to capture the moment and share. If time permits, we’ll play “make pretty” later. In the meantime, if you see something you like, please feel free to yank it off Flickr and have your way with it.
